RJA #15b: Reflection on What You Learned

I learned to perform research better in this class. In my previous English class I got a small taste of research in preparation of my final paper. In this class the whole semester was geared toward becoming a more accomplished researcher. I now have the knowledge and skill on where to look and what to do if I have to write anymore research papers in further classes or in my professional career.

Argument

RJA #14: Annotated Bibliography, Part 2

Fletcher, J. D., Sigmund Tobias, and Robert A. Wisher. "Learning Anytime, Anywhere: Advanced Distributed Learning and the Changing Face of Education." EDUCATIONAL RESEARCHER 36 (2007): 96-102. Web. 3 Nov. 2009. .
The writers of this article explain their ideas about technology changing education and the steps they are taking with their initiative to make their ideas a reality. They are funded by the Department of Defense and their work is mostly government and business related, but they believe that their work can be introduced to the school environment. Since the last time the government got involved with a new technology we got the internet, I believe the researchers are going to be onto something big.

Kurland, D. M. "Reflections on Computer-Supported Writing." Education and Technology: Reflections on Computing in Classrooms. Eds. Charles Fisher David C. Dwyer, and Keith Yocam. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass Publishers, 1996. 151-68. Print.
The author reflects on how the introduction of computer based word processing changed the writing process and the positive effects it had on writing for students. The research and observation made helped my argument by showing an immediate effect the introduction of technology into the class room had.

Metropolitan State College Of Denver 2009. Web. 3 Nov. 2009. .
I choose to cite information about the computer lab from this website because I am a student at the campus. I am also familiar with the computer lab and the purpose of its usage. I felt this would be a good quote to show where some of our tuition money is being spent and for what purpose.

Miller, John W., Leonard P. Martineau, and Robert C. Clark. "Technology Infusion and Higher Education: Changing Teaching and Learning." Innovative Higher Education 24.3 (2000): 227-41. ArticleFirst. Web. 3 Nov. 2009.
The authors of this article acknowledged how technology is being implemented into the classroom, but the changes have not been that major and whether we should rush into more implementation. I found this useful in my paper since it helped prove that technology is useful, but it is not a substitute for the benefits of a traditional classroom and teachers and their real world experience.

Nespor, Jan. Technology and the Politics of Instruction. Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc., 2006. Print.
The author of this book has taken a very detailed research into the very beginnings of Computer-mediated Instruction (CMI). He takes a journey into the politics and budget concerned that helped lay the foundation of the online courses we have today. He also shows how computer use in the classroom has led to better grades and changes in study habits. This was a very credible and well documented look at CMI and even included chapter devoted to students experience with CMI.

Setzer, Valdemar W., and Lowell Monke. "Challenging the Applications: An Alternative View on Why, When, and How Computers Should Be Used in Education." Education and Technology: Critical and Reflective Practices. Ed. Robert Muffoleto. Cresskill: Hampton Press, Inc., 2001. 141-72. Print.
The author’s stance was about computers being used in education and how they believed children were starting out too young and how computers were affecting them. They believed that computers were helpful in education, but they felt that the effects on children and their development should be taken into consideration. I found their work useful as a point to refute against their ideas that too much emphasis was being placed on the computer doing the work for the students.

RJA #13b: Annotated Bibliography, Part 1

Apple Web. 8 Nov. 2009. .
The quote that I choose from this site has also been used in a number of commercials and is well known to many.

Berman, Sheldon. "The Reality of Virtual Learning." School Administrator 56.4 (1999): 12-16. Academic OneFile. Web. 3 Nov. 2009.
The author presents his views of how virtual learning will play out in his school using a grant provided by the department of education. He tells about their plans for implementation over a 5 year period and how they will spend the budget. The author also gets insight from teachers and students that take part in the virtual classroom and how they feel it benefits them. Having the superintendent of the school that is taking part of this leap lends a credible and unique source to my paper.

Cuban, Larry. Oversold and Underused: Computers in the Classroom. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2001. Print.
The author of this book takes the stance of how computer are being aggressively sold to schools, but they are not being used to their full potential. He gives ideas and research on how to change this and make computers an integral part of education.

Dell Laptops, Desktop Computers, Monitors, Printers & PC Accessories Web. 23 Nov. 2009. .
I choose this website as my source for a price quote since their advertisement of net books have been in heavy rotation on the television since Christmas is coming soon and they expect net books to be a hot holiday item.

RJA #13a: Field Research Report

I surveyed 100 people if they have taken an online class. I also asked them if they planned to take an online class again if they answered yes to the previous question.

Out of the 100 people surveyed they had all taken an online class, but 50% of them said they would not take an online class again.

RJA #11b: Visual Aids

I can include a chart based on the observations I have made during my class where laptop use is in abundance.

I could include a picture of the students doing other things on their laptop or texting.

I could include a copy of a survey asking how much the user texts during class.

A picture of laptops and cellphones.

a survey of how much websites are visited during class when they should be taking notes.

RJA #11a: Introduction

Laptops and cellphones. These are examples of technological inovations that are meant to make our life easier, but what if these simple items and their misuse were actually bringing about downfalls in our educational and social settings?

RJA #10b: Argument

Claim: Tecnology is affecting education.
Reasons:
1: Texting instead of listening to the lecture you are missing out on information.
2: Surfing the web instead of taking notes you do not have any information to refer back to at a later date.
3: Not learning the necasary inforamtion in one class can affect you in other classes that rely on an understanding of information from the previous class.

Evidence:

Warrants: Not doing what you are supposed to will affect your learning.

RJA #10a: Thesis Statement

Research Question:
Is technology affecting education?

Precise claim:
The use of laptops and cellphones during class time is affecting learning.

Reasons/blueprint:
1- Texting or surfing the web instead of paying attention in class you will not learn what you are supposed to.
2- Not learning what you need to will affect your understanding of the subject and can lead to downfall in other classes.

Complete thesis statement:
The misuse of cellphones and laptops in classrooms can affect education, but they are very helpful and important tools and it is up to the individual user to properly use them.

RJA #7c: Field Research Plan

For my field research I will be observing the habits of my class mates that are using laptops and cellphones in my classes. I will log what I observe them doing on their laptops and if I see them texting. I will compile my information and note the number of times that they are doing other things on their laptops instead of listening to the teacher's lecture and taking notes. I will use this information to show how this technology is affecting their learning.

What Technology is used in the classroom?
When did it first start being used?
How should it be used?
Should we rely on it so much?
Would it be harder with out it?

RJA #3b: Narrowing Research Topic

I think I might need to narrow my research topic. My topic right now is if technology is helping or hurting education. I might need to narrow it down to how specifically it is helping or hurting and if so in which ways.

RJA #3a: Exploring Research Topic

I searched for info on my topic on google.com and dir.yahoo.com. I found some blogs and book recommendations for books that are about my topic. I need to go to the library to find these books now.

RJA #2c: Delicious Account

Link to my Delicious account.

RJA #2b: Research Topic

The topic I am choosing is if Technology is helping or hindering education. The reason I choose this topic is because I am interested in studying the effects that technology is having on learning. I am interested in this because of the amount of technology that is being implemented in the classroom and the uses that I see it being used for.

I do not know much about my topic. Since starting at Metro I have seen a big reliance on online components of classroom learning. Textbooks are coming with My Math Lab and other online components that are used as part of the course curriculum. I have taken two math classes that used My Math Lab. One class had assignments that were to be done online as part of the course, and the second used My Math Lab extensively and all homework was done online and submitted from My Math Lab.

I want to learn if there are any studies done that show if technology is helping or hindering modern students. I think there are some beneficial and detrimental uses, but I want to see some hard facts and figures.

RJA #2a: Possible Topics

Texting and its ramifications on spelling.
